At Precision Family Eyecare, we believe eye care is more than just a prescription—it’s a partnership. Whether you're here for your annual eye exam, a contact lens fitting, or advanced dry eye therapy, Dr. Dieckow and our team focus on making every visit comfortable, informative, and tailored to your needs.
Below, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions from patients—so you know exactly what to expect when you visit our office.
How Long Does an Eye Exam Take?
A typical comprehensive eye exam takes about 30-45 minutes from start to finish. If you haven’t completed your health history forms online, we recommend arriving 15 minutes early. (These forms are available through our website and can also be sent by email or text.)
If your visit includes a contact lens fitting, plan for an additional 10-20 minutes, depending on your experience with insertion and removal of contacts and needs.
After your exam, many patients enjoy exploring our optical boutique, which features a wide selection of eyewear and contact lens options for every style and budget.
What Are the Stages of an Eye Exam?
At Precision Family Eyecare, our comprehensive eye exams are designed to assess both your vision and overall eye health. Here's what to expect:
- Check-In: Complete or review your patient information (can be done online in advance).
- Pre-Testing: Our technicians perform essential screenings to assist Dr. Dieckow in evaluating your eyes thoroughly.
- Retinal Imaging or Dilation: We use dilation when indicated and possible. We also offer iWellness retinal imaging as a preventive health test to help screen for conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy.
- Dilation can cause light sensitivity and blurred near vision for up to four hours.
- Our iWellness ultra-widefield imaging is a non-dilating alternative for busy patients and patients that are unable to be dilated
- Doctor’s Evaluation: A thorough exam of your prescription and ocular health.
- Optical or Contact Lens Selection: Spend 20–40 minutes with our optical team to choose the right glasses or contact lenses.

Do You Accept My Insurance?
Yes, we accept most major vision and medical insurance plans. Our staff will verify your coverage and help you maximize your benefits before your visit.
If we are out-of-network for your plan, we can still provide care and assist with submitting claims whenever possible.
What’s the difference between vision and medical insurance?
- Vision Insurance covers routine eye exams and may provide discounts on glasses or contacts.
- Medical Insurance applies when your visit involves a medical issue—like glaucoma, diabetes, or eye infections—and often includes deductibles and copays.
We always bill based on the nature of your visit and answer questions.
Copays vs. Deductibles
- Copay: A fixed fee you pay during your visit, set by your insurance plan.
- Deductible: The amount you must pay out-of-pocket each year before insurance begins covering certain services.
We’ll walk you through your insurance details and provide an estimate of coverage to prevent billing surprises after your exam.
Does an Eye Exam Cost?
Our exam fee is determined by the level of exam your eyes require. Patient's out-of-pocket expense is based on their insurance policy they signed up for if using insurance. If self-insured and we know what type of exam is needed, a quote will be provided.
We offer same-day self-pay discounts on exams and eyewear for those without insurance. We also partner with Cherry Pay—a flexible financing option with no hard credit checks and an 80% approval rate. Enjoy 0% interest for 6 months, with extended plans up to 24 months available.
What Additional Services Are Available?
We offer more than just standard eye exams:
- Ortho-K and Myopia Control: Ideal for patients who want freedom from glasses or contacts during the day, and for parents wanting to slow childhood myopia progression.
- Dry Eye Therapy and Mibo ThermoFlo: For patients struggling with dryness or irritation that’s not resolved by drugstore eye drops.
While some services may not be covered by insurance, many patients find they offer long-term comfort and convenience. As Dr. Dieckow says,
“Comprehensive vision care isn’t just about seeing clearly today — it’s about keeping your eyes healthy for life.”
